  PAMELA EBOH, Awka

Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has given reasons why the lawmakers unanimously passed the ANSIEC amendment law.

He explained that the amendment was necessary because local government elections have not been held in the state for over ten years, rendering certain sections of the law outdated.

He said, "The State Assembly is constitutionally empowered to make laws for the conduct of local government elections and general administration of councils.

”We amended the ANSIEC law to suit current realities and ensure the smooth running of the 21 local government areas in the state.”

Udeze further dismissed reports of crisis in the State Assembly as “unfounded and diversionary,” saying, "26 out of 30 lawmakers supported the amendment due to its merits.

The Speaker however commended his colleagues for prioritizing the people’s interest and also gave assurance that the Assembly will continue to make laws that will benefit Ndi Anambra.

He also harped on the independence of the 8th Assembly, noting that it is not under the control of any authority.

The Speaker expressed confidence in the Assembly’s ability to make significant contributions to the peace and development of Anambra State.
