22-year-old defender Silvan Wallner has announced his retirement from professional football just two months after signing a contract with Austrian club Blau-Weiß Linz. The Swiss player has decided to dedicate his life to faith, which no longer allows him to participate in professional sports, reports TMW.

“I am a deeply devout Christian and I read the Bible. I make decisions in my life according to it. I strive to follow Jesus Christ, and the biblical day of rest has become important to me,” said Wallner.

According to Blick, Wallner is a member of the Free Church of the Seventh-day Adventists. In this religious denomination, Saturday is considered a day of rest, during which work and any activities are prohibited to fully dedicate the day to God.

Wallner, who became the Swiss champion in 2022 with FC Zurich and represented Switzerland at youth levels, played his final match in the Austrian league on October 26.

“This means that I no longer want to play football for profit on Saturday. This is my personal conviction, one that I have arrived at recently,” Wallner stated. (777Score: Text, Excluding Headline)
